A “Strong” Approach to Sustainability Literacy: Embodied Ecology and Media

This article outlines a “strong” theoretical approach to sustainability literacy, building on an earlier definition of strong and weak environmental literacy (Stables Bishop 2001). The argument builds upon specific semiotic educational philosophy (sometimes called edusemiotics), which these authors have been contributing. Here, we highlight how view learning that centers embodied multimodal communication invites bridging biosemiotics with critical media in pursuit strong, integrated literacy. need for such construal can be observed recent scholarship cognition, education, bio/eco-semiotics. By (1) construing the environment as semiosic (Umwelt), (2) replacing notion text model, develop theory understands embodied/environmental in/across any mediality. As such, digital multimedia are deemed rest affordances. notions resources affordances also defined from perspectives. We propose biosemiotics-informed connecting both eco- critical-media accompanies much broader scope meaning-making than has case studies so far.
